Outage at Cindacta in Recife delayed flights in Brazil yesterday

BRASILIA - A breakdown in the communications system of Cindacta III, in Recife, last night provoked difficulty and delay in airports around Brazil. Because of the problem, the cause of which has not yet been identified, aircraft that flew in the Northeast region were unable to communicate with the control tower for around 70 minutes. The tower heard the conversations but was unable to transmit commands to the pilots.
Because of the problem, flights programmed to fly though the aread controlledy by Cindacta III were kept on the ground in various Brazilian cities. According to some Air Force sources, the outage did not offer any danger to the aircraft that were overflying the aread because they were monitored and controlled by the local approach towers of various airports.
